Wing Foiling
Wing foiling is a relatively new water sport that is rapidly gaining popularity among water sports enthusiasts around the world. It combines the best elements of surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing into a unique experience that cannot be matched.
Instead of a traditional sailboat or kite, the wing foil is powered by an inflatable wing that resembles the wing of an aircraft.
The wing is held by the surfer and used to steer and accelerate. The board itself resembles a small surfboard, but has an additional mast and fuselage to attach the wing.
Wing foiling is a versatile water sport that can be practised on lakes, rivers and even at sea. It does require some knowledge of wind and waves, as well as good balance and coordination. But with the right guidance and practice, anyone can learn it. Moreover, wing foiling is a great way to get in touch with nature and enjoy the outdoors.
Why Portugal is the perfect destination for Wing Foiling
Portugal has a long coastline with excellent beaches and lagoons that are perfect for water sports. It also has a temperate climate with mild winters and warm summers, making it a great year-round destination. But what really sets Portugal apart as a wing foiling destination is the presence of the Atlantic Ocean and the winds that come from there.
Aveiro’s lagoon is a great place to learn wing foiling. Aveiro lagoon is a large, shallow lagoon with flat water and steady winds that is perfect for beginners.
What to expect from a Wing Foiling lesson
If you have never winged before, the idea of starting might seem intimidating. But don’t worry, wing foiling is much easier than it looks. Besides, Tugar’s instructors are there to guide you through every step of the process.
They will train you in several intermediate steps and bring you closer to wing foiling step by step.
Step 1 (wing handling):
After a short theory covering the most necessary things you need to know about wind and water, you will learn to use the wing in a short time. You will learn to carry the wing, steer, turn and thus “catch” the wind.
Step 2 (wing surfing):
A short time later, you enter the water fully equipped with neoprene, life jacket, wing and a large SUP board. Now you can refine the handling of the wing on the water and surf in light winds and smooth water for the first time. You’ll be surprised how quickly you progress and can surf independently after a short time.
3rd step (foiling):
After steps 1 and 2, put the wing aside for a while and dedicate yourself completely to the foil and the wonderful feeling of “flying” silently over the water. With the support of motorboats, you can enjoy foiling without a wing or wind for the first time. It feels a little shaky at first, but you will soon find that the board stabilises.
Step 4 (wing foiling):
Now you merge all the steps together. You now learn to handle and control the wing on the foilboard. You will soon be flying alone over the lake, powered by the wind, with no motor and almost no noise, very light and almost weightless.
Safety considerations
As with any water sport, safety is an important consideration with wing foiling. It is important to know how to use the equipment safely and how to protect yourself from injury. This is why Tugar works only with certified instructors who have extensive knowledge of safety and emergency procedures.
