Porto offers many activities for an interesting outdoor holiday. For instance, it is well worth visiting Porto city. Here, on the banks of the Douro River, you will find a labyrinth of small streets with cafes, restaurants and terraces overlooking the river.
Those who love shopping can indulge in Rua Santa Catarina, a long shopping street with lots of street entertainment and even more shops.
If it is not too busy, it is worth visiting the famous bookstore Lello. But keep in mind that there are normally long queues at the door.
Across the river is located Gaia with its famous wine cellars.
Where the river flows into the sea, you will find several beaches on both sides of the Douro.
From here, you can go kayaking or Stand Up Paddling across the Douro.
Parque Natural do Litoral Norte
You can also, after a few days’ city break, drive up the coast to the Parque Natural do Litoral Norte.
Located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cavado River, this natural park is one of Portugal’s 13 natural parks.
From Porto, a little over an hour’s drive takes you to the Unesco Geopark. The Geopark has been declared World Heritage by Unesco. You’ll find several geological attractions such as the ‘birthing stones’. The park also offers various activities. For instance, you can canyoning, canoe-rafting, mountain biking, climbing, rivertrekking, rivertubing or hiking. Moreover, the longest suspension bridge in Portugal is located here and you can take a walk on the 8-kilometre wooden walkway.
